The New Stylings

Greatest hits, deep cuts, and a few things still on the demo tape. Twenty-five years of turning new technology into things that actually shipped.

I’ve stood on many stages and held many mics. I take airplane flights, at huge heights…

And the best part has been the people I’ve met along the way. I love meeting someone new, whether they’re a Chief so-and-so Officer, a roustabout in the Utica Shale, or a BIM tech, and hearing what they love (and loathe) about their jobs, what they’ve seen and heard, and how the random person now darkening their doorstep might be able to make their work lives just a little bit better.

Here are some of my greatest hits:

Community Twins

communitytwins.com

Sensors-as-a-service for HOA communities. Continuous monitoring turns property risk from an annual surprise into something you can see coming, with LoRaWAN sensors and “asset management lite” feeding a digital twin of each community.

Deetly.co

deetly.co

An experiment in running a company with AI agents as the operating team: entity formation, legal setup, product design, marketing, and code. The product replaces static, performative status reports with an interactive “status feed.”

What I’ve learned so far: AI-assisted coding is real and compelling. What breaks is everything around it: product design, agent orchestration, customer support, and platform upkeep still need a human owner, and the gap shows up directly in quality and speed-to-market.

AI & emerging technology

A state DOT’s AI strategy and governance model

Working with the commissioner’s AI committee, a team of human experts and four AI agents identified 20 initiatives across a 36-month horizon, sequenced for the real problems: shifting funding and regulation, and an agency heading toward 70%+ turnover in five years, taking decades of institutional knowledge with it.

Linking port investment to naval readiness

Built the digital ambition and roadmap for a navy’s port maintenance and modernization program, using AI-enabled simulation and scenario modeling to show leaders how a quay upgrade changes the kill chain.

AI-assisted sales enablement at a global chemical company

Designed a strategy for the field sales organization: automated solution design and “next best action” recommendations grounded in account, application, and win/loss history.

Global AI & digital practice lead

Grew an emerging AI and digital services business from $30M to $140M+ in three years, scaling to 550+ practitioners across 50 countries, with a bench of 12 global leaders built along the way.

New businesses & big bets

New business launchpad

An innovation execution engine reporting to the CEO and business-line presidents of a top global powersports company. A blended team of 20 identified, refined, and vetted a dozen candidate businesses, “took over” a dealership as a live test bed, and launched two of them. Together they now generate $100M+ in net new revenue.

Major automaker: Everyday Adventures

Typically, consumers buy a new vehicle and that’s where the relationship with the OEM ends. We paired vehicles with experiences, from golf trips to local culinary outings, then built the business model, platform strategy, and first market tests, all smack dab in the middle of COVID.

Mobile fuel payments

I was the product owner for the world’s first mobile fuel payments app, now with more than a million downloads on Google Play alone. I ran the product roadmap, dev team liason, and field trials, including at real gas stations. So yes, I am indeed professionally qualified to pump gas.

Cities, countries & citizens

AlUla, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Digital Executive on a multi-year complex infrastructure delivery engagement. The job: connect time, cost, and risk to KPIs you don’t usually see on a construction dashboard, like wildlife populations, hotel keys, and readiness for UN meetings and concerts. (See the photo on Pat’s Boutique for the sand dune-adjacent evidence.)

Medicaid work requirements

Ethnographic research with Medicaid recipients across income levels and geographies, used to design the digital outreach for one of the governor’s cornerstone initiatives to couple benefits with an individualized “return to work” incentive structure.

Autobuses de Oriente (ADO), Mexico City

A 30-person multinational team redesigned the customer experience for everything from regional economy buses to luxury coaches to open-top tour buses: mobile apps, digital ticketing, wayfinding, and multi-modal booking. I was able to win friends and influence people as one of the few gringos that rolled into La Tapo on a regular basis.

Digital strategy & platforms

Environmental remediation as a portfolio

A single prioritized view of remediation liability and spend across a major chemical company’s footprint, replacing site-by-site reporting, and reprioritizable at will as business goals and markets changed.

Global oil major

Developed a digital strategy that paired emerging technology with an assessment of the cultural drivers behind adoption.

Prevoyance Group

Founded and ran my own consultancy for seven years, with Fortune 500 clients like Nissan, SAP, Baker Hughes, and Lennox, and teams in Beijing, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Germany, France, Italy, and the UK.

Bonus tracks

I wrote a book about technology management, Breakthrough IT: Supercharging Organizational Value Through Technology (John Wiley & Sons), and had a multi-year stint as a TechRepublic columnist, commenting on technology and IT strategy. I’ve also written for publications ranging from The Wall Street Journal to Shooting Sports USA.

Before all of this: management consulting and ERP/CRM at various companies after graduating from Boston College, where I also raced (slowly) GS and slalom for the Division I ski team.
